Design Awards

Kathy Flack, ASID - Professional Member of American Society of Interior Designers and Registered Interior Designer of Iowa has received numerous awards throughout her career, including National, Regional, and Local awards.

On a National level, Kathy received the Halo National Lighting Award for first place contract design for her Flack Interior Design Office at the River Plaza Building.  In 2002, Kathy had a dining room she designed for a local client published in the February issue of "Architectural Digest" magazine in a special section for Outstanding Midwest Designers.

On a Regional level, Kathy has received two Nebraska-Iowa ASID Presidential Citation Awards for Distinguished Service to the Society and Profession, the latest in 2008 for her leadership in chapter activities and for her appointment by the Governor to the first Interior Design Examining Board after passage of Iowa's Interior Designer Registration Act.

Flack Interior Design Associates has received multiple Residential Design Awards, including the 2003 Residential Singular Space award by the Nebraska-Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design.  In 2008, Flack Interior's received two awards from the Nebraska-Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design "Over 7000 Square Feet" residential space award and "Singular Space 750 Square Feet" residential space award.  In 2009, they received two more awards from the Nebraska-Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design, both Silver-An Excellent Rating "Singular Space for A Private Residence".

Kathy graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design in Business.  After working in local interior design businesses between 1973 - 1980, she opened her own business in 1981
Kathy Flack Interiors was started out of her home, designing office and residential interiors.  In 1986 the business was incorporated and named Flack Interior Design Associates, Inc.  The business moved into the River Plaza Building in downtown Waterloo.  In 1995, the business moved to a larger space on Kimball Avenue in Waterloo.  In 2008, Kathy merged with Simpson Furniture & Floor Covering as Director of Design for their Interior Design Division.
Kathy has been a member of the American Society of Interior Designers since 1975.  She passed the N.C.I.D.Q. (National Council for Interior Design Qualifications) exam in 1980, earning accreditation as well as a professional member designation in A.S.I.D. In 2008, Kathy became a Registered Interior Designer of Iowa and was appointed by the Governor of Iowa to serve on the first Interior Design Examining Board after passage of Iowa's Registration Act.

Kathy Flack and Brandy Smith of Flack Interior Design Associates received two awards for local interior design projects at the Nebraska/Iowa American Society of Interior Designers Awards Banquet. 

The “Over 7000 Square Feet” category entry was for a Cedar Falls residence and the “Singular Space 750 Square Feet” category entry was for a living-dining room area of a Waterloo residence.

Flack was also presented a “Presidential Citation” honor for her leadership in chapter activities and for her appointment by the Governor to the first Interior Design Examining Board after passage of Iowa’s Registration Act.

The Silver-Award of Excellence Ratings is based on 10 criteria: design concept, space planning, lighting, color scheme, unity, balance & variety, scale, effective use of furnishings, and presentation. 

Kathy Flack and Brandy Smith of Flack Interior Design Associates recently received project awards at the Nebraska/Iowa American Society of Interior Designers Award Celebration. 

A Cedar Valley client’s lake home family room and kitchen, and a Waterloo client’s residence remodeled den each won an “Excellent” rating.
