Nesting Instinct - Designers offer inspiration, ideas for updating decor

As the ice thaws, there’s an urge to feather our nests with fresh, new looks.  Staring at the same four walls for months has brought the anticipation of spring to a fever pitch, and as days grow longer, we notice the dingy paint and outdated wall coverings, tired furniture and boring décor.

Find inspiration for updating décor and creating a comfortable, welcoming environment in the American Society of Interior Designer’s Showcase at the Eastern Iowa Home Improvement and Landscaping Show.

Kathy Flack, A.S.I.D. describes the room as "a conversation seating area with a tranquil setting.  There’s a mix of textures, accessories, lighting and large-scale contemporary art, and we’re using colors inspired by an island beach – blue skies and off-white beaches.  Furnishings include a contemporary armless sectional in oyster chenille, travertine marble-based desk topped with sea-green glass that can be used as a desk, small eating area or game table and chairs with a metallic finish in a color reminiscent of silver moonlight on the beach.  A textured area rug in oyster, sheer window treatment, sky blue metallic wall covering and seashore-inspired accessories.”

The inspiration for Kathy's design was a sculptural platform that holds sand and shells.  That and our minus 15 temperatures made her think of going to a tropical island.”

The most important design elements in the room was the floating effect that the armless sectional gives the space and the contemporary art.  They create an architectural effect.

The color scheme of seashore-inspired colors and the floor plan is what people can take away and adapt at home.  People who have smaller rooms can have a lot of seating and a lot of function in the furniture.  You don’t have to have a large space to adapt for family living.
